Shunji Yamanaka is a design engineer and teaches at the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies, University of Tokyo. After graduating from the University of Tokyo in 1982, he worked at Nissan before becoming a freelance designer in 1987. He founded Leading Edge Design in 1994. He taught at Keio University from 2008 to 2012, before joining the University of Tokyo in 2013. As a designer, his work includes everything from wristwatches to trains, while his work as an engineer includes robotics and communications. At university his research investigates new relationships between humans and objects such as prosthetic limbs and robots that appeal to the senses. His many awards include the Mainichi Design Award in 2014, iF Product Design Award in Germany, and a Good Design Award. In 2010, his Tagtype Garage Kit was added to the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
